Funkefeller Debuts Super Toxic EP – Exclusive Interview

There’s a new artist in town that is starting to turn heads in the electronic music scene. Funkefeller (aka. Dan Orlando) recently released an explosive EP entitled SUPER TOXIC, his first release on the Sonic Masterworks record label. We caught up with Funkefeller in his Arizona studio for an exclusive interview on April 20, 2011, the day of the SUPER TOXIC release.

funkefeller live

With an impressive background in computer science, it seems quite fitting that Funkefeller portrays his identity as a mad scientist on stage. It isn’t hard to see why the artist is getting a lot of attention either. When playing live, Funkefeller can be found in full costume and surrounded by impressive gear. When combined with a plethora of visual effects that appear to have come straight from a science lab gone haywire, it comes as no surprise that Funkefeller often leaves crowds chanting for more.

Funkefeller continues to pique the interest of the masses with the new SUPER TOXIC EP, described as “…a high-energy blend of electro house, dubstep, and breaks.” Here are some of the highlights of our interview with Funkefeller:

What were the main driving factors that played a role in the construction of the SUPER TOXIC EP?

“I grew up in Chicago, listening to a lot of hard house and industrial music, but I also wanted to build something really freakin’ catchy. I like dubstep as well, so I sort of set out to combine my favorite elements of dubstep with the high-energy distorted leads and driving four-on-the-floor beats that you find in a lot of hardstyle and dirty electro house music. I get bored pretty easily though, so I change up the rhythms and melodies a lot in the tracks to keep things interesting.”

Who are your influences?

“This is tough because I started making music at such an early age and my taste in music underwent a lot of unexpected changes through the years. I’ve always liked the real hard stuff like early Korn, Slipknot, Pantera and hardcore gangster rap; the type of shit that’ll make your grandma cringe. In terms of electronic music, I like Skrillex a lot because our musical background and taste in music are quite similar, so I feel like I can relate to his music a lot. Daft Punk, Chemical Brothers, and Fatboy Slim have always been quite influential for me as well.”

Could you tell us more about your musical background?

“My Dad started giving me piano lessons when I was 4, and I started recording on my Dad’s four-track at about seven or eight. I really got serious about my musicianship at around twelve though when I started playing the guitar. I was part of a few rock bands during my teenage years doing vocals and guitar. I studied music theory and composition in college too, and spent a lot of time refining my production skills. That’s also when I started to do the DJ thing for the local radio station and playing at parties. Then I took a break for a while and focused mostly on my software stuff. I got back into it about two years ago, which is about when I started my label Sonic Masterworks, and pretty much just went balls-to-the-wall with it.”

At what point did you get the idea for the mad scientist?

“Probably about 6 months ago or so, which was also about the same time that I started making SUPER TOXIC. I wanted a way to separate myself, and it just seemed to make sense with everything I’ve done in computer science. My sister, who is doing most of my management right now, helped establish the brand identity of Funkefeller, and it just sort of caught on I guess.”

Why the name Funkefeller?

“Well, I had already branded my real name in the software industry, so I had to come up with something else. Plus, I like having an element of mystery behind the origin of my music, like a “secret identity” or something. The only ones who were ever really able to pull that off well have been Daft Punk. To this day, the vast majority of people would never know if Daft Punk were standing right in front of them without their costumes on.”

Could you tell us about the gear you used for the EP and the gear you use live?

“There’s a few soft synths that I really like a lot, like the DCAM Synth Squad from FXPansion, especially Cypher. I used Cypher to make a lot of the wobble basses on the EP. I also used Omnisphere, Trillian from Spectrasonics and Nexus 2 and Vanguard from reFX. I programmed a lot of the drums with Native Instruments’ Maschine and I do most of my production in Ableton Live with an Axiom Pro as my main controller. For live stuff, I have an Allen & Heath Xone4D that I programmed for use with Traktor 2 along with a Traktor X1 controller and a Korg Kaoss Pad for some added effects. If I have some space to work with up there, then I’ll bring a second laptop with a Launchpad and the Maschine and run Live on it and sync it up to Traktor via Midi. I’m still getting used to the dual-laptop setup though, and I really admire guys like Dubfire who make that shit look easy.”

What are you working on now?

“I don’t want to spoil any surprises, but I’ve been working with a great female vocalist in the lab, so you can expect to hear her on the next release. I’m also working with some other artists to release on the label.”

What’s it like to run a new record label with everything that is happening right now for Funkefeller?

“Its a bit more of a challenge when you’re running a record label in addition to being an artist because there is a lot more at stake and you have to be able to switch back and forth between business and creative modes. Its important to have a driving force like the Funkefeller brand to propel a new label like Sonic Masterworks, but its equally as important to get a solid group of artists on it as well. When it comes down to it, strength in numbers is really how a record label survives in this music industry, so that’s what I’m after right now.”

Recorded and produced with Bill Lefler in Los Angeles, CA, in the fall of 2009 and mixed by John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, The Hold Steady, Kurt Vile), Oui Camera Oui shows the EP short form can pack a powerful punch, and it whets the appetite for the band’s next EP installments which will include sister songs, prequels, epilogues and other forms to create connections across several releases. Oui Camera Oui features memorable guest appearances by Britt Daniel of Spoon (“Berlin Wall”) and Eugene Mirman, who recites the EP’s comic epilogue (“Careful With That Review, Eugene”). Group Therapy North American Tour Dates

With the release of their Group Therapy album just around the corner, UK dance music titans Above & Beyond embark on their extensive 34-date North American leg of the ‘Group Therapy World Tour.’ Taking in all the major U.S. cities, Above & Beyond will hit famed venues such as Chicago’s House of Blues, Toronto’s Guvernment, and sold-out shows at New York’s Best Buy Theatre on Broadway and two nights at L.A.’s Hollywood Palladium.
Above & Beyond’s latest single from Group Therapy, “Thing Called Love,” follows the widespread success of the trio’s recent crossover smash “Sun & Moon” – a track playlisted by BBC Radio 1. Again featuring the distinctive vocals of Richard Bedford, “Thing Called Love” is a powerful song-driven anthem that upholds Above & Beyond’s unique ability to marry innovative electronic grooves with stirring, thoughtful lyrics that are the antithesis of throwaway club tracks.

In keeping with the stadium-sized sound of “Sun & Moon,” new Radio and Club mixes from Above & Beyond blend chunky electro basslines with forward-thinking, euphoric melody drops. Sitting neatly outside genres, “Thing Called Love” is another festival-ready anthem with meaning from Above & Beyond. Already played on Scott Mill’s ‘Ready For The Weekend’ show on BBC Radio 1, Above & Beyond feat. Richard Bedford “Thing Called Love” will be released on May 29.
Above & Beyond’s highly anticipated second artist album Group Therapy will be out June 2011 on Ultra Music.

PornstarGlobal Announces Newest 5 Star Award Sponsor: Porn (The Band)

Seattle, Washington, April 20th, 2011 — PornstarGlobal.com obtains Sponsorship from The widely known Industrial Rock phenomenon ‘PORN‘, for the 2012 5 Star Awards. That’s right, PORN the Band meets PORN the Industry, and although 2 completely different animals, there has always been an undeniably powerful relationship between Music and Adult Entertainment. With 2 of the most profitable elements online joining forces, this news may very well spark a brush fire of innovative & atypical partnerships throughout both Industries.

In 2009 Jenna Haze claimed the inaugural 5 Star Award accolade, followed by 2010 Winner Sunny Leone and most recently Kagney Linn Karter (2011). Votes are being collected at triple the rate than that of 2009 and continue to have tremendous annual growth. With the 2012 Award announcement some 8 months away, Pornstars still have ample time to gain the votes needed to secure a victory. The 5 Star Awards offer up a Winning prize unlike any award system previous – See Rules for more info.

A simple click of the mouse is what it takes to cast a vote. Each vote is then recorded and stored for calculation in December, and as always the voting ballot is accessible 24-7 from any of the 5 Star Award pages. PornstarGlobal also offers free customization of all promotional tools (including ‘Vote For Me’ banners), to help any participant achieve maximum exposure.

The Band PORN lunged toward notoriety in 1999 unaware that in 1 years time Francis ZEGUT, (discovered and supported bands such as Venom and Metallica in France), would air ‘Soft Machine-Porn Machine’ for the first time on RTL2, which would lead the band to a decade of distinguished projects and have them sharing the stage with numerous legendary icons such as Hanoi Rocks. In 2006, the record “Call Me Superfurry” was released with distribution by MGM while the band would place future releases on the back burner. 2010 was a resurrection year of sorts for PORN, and touring with the Murder Dolls allowed for healthy performances focused around their latest Best-Of CD entitled ‘A Decade in Glitter and Danger’. Fans Worldwide wait with expectation for PORN’s upcoming CD ‘From the Void to the Infinite’ set for release fall 2011.

News, bio, tour info, music, videos, merchandise, and free downloads are available at PornTheBand.com.

“We began listening to PORN in 2004 and have been following their progress every step of the way”, says PornstarGlobal.com Owner. “It is with great pleasure we are not only working with them now, but also that PORN Fans in general are allowing us into their world”. ” This partnership is more like a ‘Dream Team’” he adds.

Turbo Celebrates 100

100 years ago i had a dream: release music I love, with pro graphics, without goin bankrupt. 100 12-inches later, Turbo stands high on the rubble of crumbled empires: Mo’Wax, Factory, Institubes all dead in our wake…. we will never give up the fight: music we love, dressed for success, format-democratic, NEVER going bankrupt. Climbing to the stars, 300 copies at a time. it’s just us and Jack White, motherfuckers… bring on the next 100. See you in 2017.

Love from Montreal,
Tiga

The list of artists who have appeared on Turbo Recordings is staggering by any measure. For an indie dance label to survive 13 years and over 100 releases is a  remarkable feat, but for a singles-driven label, the magic has often revolved around  the institution of the remix. Turbo A&R have done an extraordinary job of bringing in talent, poaching the most exciting artists of the moment. It makes sense then, for its 100th release, that they would craft a package that highlights this prowess.

For anyone who heard it out, ZZafrika was unquestionably one of the biggest records of the year. The renegade dove-child of Tiga and Zombie Nation, ZZT has built up a cult following by virtue of its off-the-rails, wildly eccentric party tracks. They don’t do interviews. They don’t do remixes. They don’t do filler. As the duo puts the finishing touches on their outrageously great debut album, Turbo has decided to settle some unfinished business and follow up the one-sided pro-etched vinyl 12″ with a full-blown release, one that would do the track justice and bring it to the wider audience it  deserves.

For the mega triple-pack vinyl we have six cuts:

Gesaffelstein, the next big French techno star, white-hot off his new Conspiracy EP, has turned in an absolute god-hammer. The Turbo office has been flooded with requests for advance copies. And we’ve flooded other people’s offices with straight-up “NO”s.

Julio Bashmore, one of the UK’s most promising young producers, turned in what Tiga is calling his favourite song ever, expanding on the delicate Rhodes intro and turning it into a beautifully melodic synth-ballad.

Australia’s Light Year team up with Turbo-pals Finger Prince to craft an awesome rework. They’ve kept the riff intact but broadened the breakdowns, beefed up the beats, and dropped in touches of tweaky funk.

Plein Soleil, a Krikor and Chloé production alias, chug out another rugged, warm masterpiece. Classy, versatile, stripped-down, highly playable. A major winner.

New Turbo signing Crowdpleaser lends his stoned, easy-going good-time groove. Put it on. Light up your lava bong. You’ll start dancing and forget what time it is. After-hours underground house jam, Geneva-style.

Tomas Andersson finally returns the favour for Tiga’s legendary remix of Washing Up, tightening the core into a festival-jacking techno anthem. Wait wait…we’re still going!!

We have 4 more amazing versions as digital exclusives:
We won’t lie…we wanted a hit. Also, we thought the world needed to get ZZafrojacked, to BE ZZafrojacked. Afrojack delivers the digital only goods to rule Beatport and Beatport alone.Belgium’s Sound of Stereo gets the kids’ hands up high. These guys are going to get huger sooner or later. Anyone need a breakdown?

Proxy protegé Marseille brings the raw ghetto insanity of Russia to the people. It’s got more WOOs and bleeps than the rest of the remixes combined. We counted.

Finally, Turbo Scottish young guns Clouds rough out a grinding, deep-fried bass-trap belter. It momentarily relents and teases the Rhodes, then it’s right back to pitiless face-mashing for these eleven-year-old prodigies.

Limited to 500 copies, this 180-gram triple-vinyl boxed set will include a unique code to download the Turbo Century retrospective compilation of the label’s best music from it’s first 100 releases.

Turbo 100 will be available for pre-order shop-turbo.com from April 28th.

Swimming With Dolphins To Release Debut May 17 On Tooth & Nail

Minneapolis, Minnesota’s Swimming With Dolphins will release their debut album, Water Colours, on May 17 via Tooth & Nail. The ambient synth-pop singer/songwriter, Austin Tofte, formally of Owl City, is currently on tour with Family Force 5 in support of the compelling disc, which was greatly inspired by the ocean and fond childhood memories of America’s largest lakes. The album’s first single, “Sleep To Dream,” will be digitally released April 26 and is available to stream at on the band’s Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/swimmingwithdolphins, today.

Produced by Aaron Sprinkle (Anberlin, The Almost) and Zack Odom and Kenneth Mount (Cartel, Mayday Parade), Water Colours expands upon Tofte’s contemporary synth-pop, which he previously explored on 2008′s Ambient Blue EP, boasting heartfelt lyrics and a vibrant sonic palette. The disc represents two-plus years of songwriting by Tofte and has a deeply organic, human feel.

“There’s a lot more tribulation in this record that inspired lyrics,” Tofte says of the album. “There’s a long relationship throughout half the process that those songs are about-the different phases of the relationship. It is a really relational record, and pretty intimate and revealing of my emotions and the things I was going through. I love poppy, toe-tapping stuff, but I don’t really find myself writing a lot of lyrics that just put the cherry on top of that.”

Swimming With Dolphins was born in 2008 when Tofte teamed with friend Adam Young on a side project to Young’s Owl City band. Tofte eventually left Owl City to make this his full-time gig, eventually signing with Tooth & Nail and heading into the studio to record Water Colours. Swimming With Dolphins has since toured with Owl City, Lydia and We Are the In Crowd.

The tour with Family Force 5 kicked off on Friday April 15 in Atlanta, GA, along with Stereo Skyline and Since Forever, and concludes on May 15 in Kansas City, MO.

“I’m ready to be on the road,” Tofte says. “I’ve spent a lot of time writing and in the studio, and I’ve  got a band now, and we’re all excited about it. It’s awesome. I feel like we’re going to have fun on this record, for a while, and it’s been a long time coming. It feels like a new chapter.”

Motor City Drum Ensemble Mixes New DJ-Kicks

“When did I fall in love?” Danilo Plessow, known to the world of dance music as Motor City Drum Ensemble, echoes the question. Wearing the kind of smile that indicates true love, first love, the kind of love that will never leave you, he gazes upon a city park. A bunch of kids are playing catch. He was their age when he fell in love for the first time: with the beat. So he started playing the drums. That beat is his companion to this day. Having morphed through all kinds of forms its recent incarnation is delivered to the public on his amazing, genre blending DJ-Kicks mix; a mix more than worthy of the series’ history of ruthless experimentation with, and re-definition of, the Mix CD medium.

His understanding of how the parts of a track can work has never been more apparent than on his DJ-Kicks mix. In 10 years, playing 80+ gigs a year, including such temples as Berghain, Fabric London, Rex and MOS, he’s absorbed dance history through hard and disciplined work behind the decks. Look at the opening selections of his DJ-Kicks mix to get a glimpse of his amazing ability to fuse totally disparate sound aesthetics into a coherent whole.  He sets the scene and opens the party with the uplifting and inviting chants of Sun Ra’s “Door To The Cosmos”, then drops a groove of contempo Soul via NZ youngsters Scratch 22’s Remix of Electric Wire Hustle’s “Again”, which then just melts perfectly with Rhythm & Sounds’ machine dub of “Mango Drive.” Be prepared because this is just the beginning! Before you know it the guitars of Tony Allen’s “Ariya” tickle their way into the mix, its combination of collective chant and afro beat leading the listener into a joyful bliss. As you tap your foot the set dives into a  tribute to one of the most influential urban centers of club culture: the Windy City. Between the driving soul of Peven Everett’s ode to love “Stuck” and the joined forces of Tevo and “Poppa” Rick Howard’s “Can Your Love Find Its Way” you find the master of Chicago house music: Mr. Fingers. It’s a beautiful homage to one of the main chapters in dance music history with the only “foreign” track ironically being an edit of Germany’s Bad Jazz Troupe.

Assembling the mix was a true journey for Danilo, painstakingly going through his collection, combining tracks, making edits—a quest in search of those “magic moments”, as he puts it. In this mix one prime example of these “magic moments” surely lies in that split second when the pads of Fred P.’s “On this Vibe” drop into the gorgeous Stone’s “Girl I Like The Way That You Move.” Moving on, Pablo Valentino, Danilo’s label colleague at MCDE with an equal disregard for genre boundaries, and his Creative Swing Alliance leads the listener into the proto-Afrobeat of Geraldo Pino’s “Black Woman Experience” followed by an absolutely mind-blowing edit of Philip Sarde’s “Le Cortège et Course,” a track that in the hands of Motor City Drum Ensemble sounds more like a techno classic than what it is: a piece from a 1972 movie soundtrack, César et Rosalie, starring Romy Schneider and Yves Montand. You want another “magic moment?” There it is beaming you right into the Minimal Nation of Robert Hood’s “The Pace!”

Hood’s track is part one of a subdivision in this mix that, like the Chicago homage before it, works as a bow before the fathers. One after the other, the names making up the chapter this time are: Hood, Arthur Russell, Walter Gibbons and Aphex Twin, with Motor City Drum Ensemble’s aptly titled “L.O.V.E.”—Danilo’s beautifully seductive version of nocturnal soul music—sitting right there in company. In the hands of less talented compilers such lining-up of total heroes could result in a superficial “favorites mixtape” fiasco but thanks to Danilo’s impeccable intuition and architectural sensibility every choice he makes creates a natural link, no matter how huge the genre, era and geography gap he is crossing.

So, after the Selected Ambient Work “Actium” gives way to the wonderland that is Isolées remix of Recloose’s “Cardiology” we are slowly approaching the end of Motor City Drum Ensemble’s DJ-Kicks. Latecomer, a Moscow based multi-instrumentalist, singer and producer that was discovered by MCDE last year, induces a last moment of tranced concentration before the “African Chant” by contemporary Scando Jazzer Timo Lassy provides the listener with another plateau of musical high.

This personal and spiritual journey is then bookended by one of the high points in cosmic disco history: John Mason’s “Sweet Power, Your Embrace”—a track oh-so wonderfully representative of Danilo’s intentions and inspirations. It’s always a good sign when your hero gives you a call to express his enthusiasm about your choice—as Mr. Mason did in this case. It’s that moment when both sides are feeling honored: father and son, joined through the love of the music.

And so Motor City Drum Ensemble’s DJ-Kicks ends. The listener has gained yet another glimpse into the cosmos of Danilo Plessow’s inner world and the DJ-Kicks series has been the stage for yet another beautiful dance. With the next months holding an extensive tour schedule for Danilo, dancers around the world will be able to experience his gift as a selector first hand. Louie Vega presents…

This new double mix CD features music from a diverse pool of artists including Basement Jaxx Feat Yoko Ono, Dennis Ferrer, Anané & her unique style of Nulu Music (label/imprint), Josh Milan (of Blaze), Todd Terry, Loco Dice, Peven Everett, Boddhi Satva and South African superstars Black Coffee and Hugh Masekela

Louie Vega remains one of a handful of superstar dj’s that remains close to his musical roots and able to play a tremendous cross section of music to his audiences from the Super Bowl opening to huge township parties in South Africa, Louie’s fanbase keeps on growing. “Mad Styles and Crazy Vision 2:  A Journey Into Electronic, Soulful, Afro & Latino Rhythms” was conceived to highlight the fact that the high-energy dance music that graced dance floors throughout the seventies and eighties (and had a profound influence on his own career) is very much relevant today.

The music nerds amongst you will be surprised, as we were, to discover the intricate levels of filtering and phasing that went into Stevie Wonder’s ‘Songs In The Key of Life’ LP, and there is a recognizable strand of today’s disco influenced dance producers applying the trickery of pioneers such as Larry Levan, Arthur Baker and Patrick Adams. Full marks if you acquire this album – not only for supporting the movement but also for acknowledging the great fusion that disco was and still is. With sprinklings of African, Latin, jazz, funk and electro pop rhythms the production today is tighter in some instances but still breathy, sexy, up tempo and ultimately for the sweaty dance floor. While Louie circles the globe spreading his musical message, this compilation manages to capture some of the magic he brings to the various dancefloors.

Grammy Award winner (and four time Grammy nominated) and house music pioneer Louie Vega is one of the leading Dance Music DJ’s in the world. He is also one half of the legendary DJ/Production team Masters at Work who produced and remixed countless songs for the likes of Madonna, George Benson, Marc Anthony, Luther Vandross, Michael Jackson, Black Eyed Peas, and Curtis Mayfield to name a few. They also went on to release the acclaimed landmark Nuyorican Soul project on Talking Loud/ Mercury Records in 1997.

Over a decade ago Louie Vega did his first mix CD for the BBE label. Finally the follow up to Mad Styles and Crazy Visions takes up the mantle of how far dance music has continued to evolve fusing a broad range of influences that sum up Louie Vega and the BBE music philosophy.
